Rest Is Part of Your Power
You do not have to reach the end of yourself before you are allowed to pause. The dishes are still in the sink. A message is waiting for an answer. Somewhere in your mind, tomorrow has already begun asking questions.
You do not have to reach the end of yourself before you are allowed to pause.
The dishes are still in the sink. A message is waiting for an answer. Somewhere in your mind, tomorrow has already begun asking questions.
You sit down, but you have not quite stopped working. You are sorting, remembering, anticipating. Even your quiet moments seem to belong to someone else.
If this feels familiar, the question may be larger than whether you need an earlier bedtime. It may be time to reconsider the terms under which you allow yourself to rest.
For a Black woman who has often been praised for being capable, dependable, and strong, stopping can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. When people count on your endurance, it is easy to start treating that endurance as an obligation. But being good at carrying responsibilities does not make your capacity unlimited.
Notice what kind of tired you are
Before deciding what would help, name what has been demanding so much of you.
Are you sleepy? Overwhelmed by decisions? Worn down by conversation? Tired of being the person who notices everything that needs doing?
These questions are a practical reflection, not a diagnostic test. Their value is specificity. An early night may be useful when you are short on sleep. An evening without hosting, planning, or answering nonurgent questions may better address the feeling of being constantly available.
Try finishing this sentence: “What I would most like a break from today is…”
Your answer does not have to sound impressive. It might be the television, the group chat, the dinner decision, or the expectation that you will remain cheerful through all of it.
Let something remain unfinished
A home can always be cleaner. An inbox can always be emptier. If completion is the condition for rest, there may never be a stopping point.
Choose one reasonable ending for tonight. Put away the food and leave the remaining dishes. Send the necessary message and close the app. Write tomorrow’s first task on a piece of paper instead of continuing to rehearse the entire day.
This is a decision about sequence. Some things need attention now. Others can wait without becoming a judgment on your character.
If unfinished work belongs to a shared household, discuss who will handle it. Quietly postponing everything until you can do it yourself may simply move the burden to tomorrow.
Ask for help that has a shape
“I need more support” is true, but a concrete request gives another person something to do.
“Can you take responsibility for dinner on Thursday, including deciding what we are eating?”
“Please handle the school forms this week.”
“I need half an hour alone after I get home. Let’s talk after that.”
Whenever possible, transfer the whole responsibility, including the remembering and planning. Having someone carry out instructions while you continue directing every detail may offer less relief than you hoped.
Of course, help is not equally available to everyone. Paid work, caregiving, money, and housing can limit your choices. Those limits deserve acknowledgment. They are not proof that you have failed at self-care.
Give sleep its own place
Quiet time and sleep are different needs. A peaceful hour on the sofa cannot replace the sleep your body requires.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute advises making enough time for sleep and keeping a consistent sleep schedule. Its guidance also recommends a quiet, cool, dark bedroom. These are useful foundations, even when real life makes consistency difficult. Healthy Sleep Habits
If exhaustion remains persistent, severe, or unexplained, bring it to a healthcare professional. You deserve more than an assumption that being tired is simply your role in life.
Rest without turning it into a performance
Your pause does not need matching pajamas, an expensive candle, or a photograph. It can be ordinary: a closed door, a comfortable chair, a conversation you postpone until you have the capacity for it.
It also does not need to make you more productive tomorrow to be worthwhile today.
Tonight, choose something that can wait. Let the decision stand. Sit down without composing an apology for the fact that you needed to.
